Hangovers Part Two

We must be gluttons for punishment because despite efforts to stay home and relax we have managed to create more hangovers in the last couple weeks than we have in a while.

Most recently I joined Martyn for a trip up to Mammoth Mountain so he could get some snowboarding in and I could get a change of scenery. After a few runs on the mountain Martyn accompanied me in enjoying the sunny weather with margaritas at Gomez's, a dip in the local hot springs, and ending in overly posh snacks at Mammoth's Hive. Eventually we retired to our hotel with blurry memories of the day.

The next morning, feeling like death warmed over, while trying to ignore the self loathing pain in my skull, looking at the clock it was already 1PM and the weather outside was starting to turn. So after a quick soak in the brain-boiling hot tub at the hotel, we ended up at The Cellar Bar attached to the Alpenhof Lodge where we were staying. Awesome little dive bar that has a huge selection beer, but no liquor, which in our case was probably a good thing.

It was a quiet Tuesday night, 70 mph gusts of winds screamed outside and snow was beginning to pile up. It was a good night to pretend to be interested in the sports on the bar's TVs while we sipped our beer. However, due to improper nutrition and our hangover from the night before, we were craving some serious food, so naturally I drooled over a commercial for Wienerschitsel's corndogs. As I professed my love for corndogs of any shape or size, Martyn informs me that he has never experienced the pleasure of the American classic. He was surely missing out in a huge way. But unfortunately there isn't a Weinerschitsel in Mammoth so I was going to have to treat him to his first corndog at a later date. So instead we decided to pay our bill and seek out some other kind of food. But just then, as our tab was being printed, I noticed that all the way down at the end of the bar there was a guy dipping a huge, monstrous corddog into tiny little trays of mustard and ketchup. What are the chances!? This bar has no liquor but it has corndogs! Genius. Food of the gods...

The perfect ending to the weekend. Here is a pic of me feeding Martyn his first corn dog. Now he can say he has experienced the joys that only corndogs can bring.

Anywhere Planet Earth Universe 2010

I feel like I could be anywhere when I'm in this beautiful park that I'm so fortunate to have a short walk out my front door. Engulfed in one of the wealthies neighborhoods in America, Franklin Canyon Park is my new favorite find. A happy morning it is to spend it walking thru its trails on this Earth Day, and happy I am to have it in my backyard, no wealth needed.

Mobile Blogging!?

I'm a little baffled by this said "simple process," so this is another attempt to post a blog via my cell phone using MMS. So for testing purposes here is a pic of M from Halloween that is bound to make you smile.

National Margarita Day

The road to hell is paved with good intentions, or is it paved with tattoos? Or is it paved with Tequila?! Not sure how you view it but our road to tacos y margaritas seems to start with tattoos.

It all started on a Monday morning, and being our usual day off we were lazing around the apartment watching, with mild interest, the Today show (not our usually scheduled program, I swear). And while contemplating how to spend our time before Martyn's tattoo appointment, the friendly and funny Kathy Lee Gifford informed us that is was National Margarita Day. This, of course, was NOT what we expected learn from the Today show, and there is no actual PROOF that it was indeed Nation Margarita Day (NMD), but it was all we needed to hear.

First matter of business was off to see Charlie at Spotlight. Charlie has been working on Martyn's tattoos for months now and as you can see there is no turning back now. This session Charlie sketched out an additional koi fish for the upper arm, something he is really good at, M seems really happy and I think is really fortunate to have found Charlie. His method involves a careful and thought out drawing-and-erasing session followed by more drawing-and-erasing. Then on to the pain, an unavoidable part.

Speaking of pain, during a recent home session of yoga bending and twisting I had hurt my back (again, and pretty bad) so our next trip to the bar stool at Loeteria Grill on Hollywood Blvd involved limping, moaning, and groaning, something I'm sure my loved ones are sick and tired of hearing from me. However since it was NMD, we had to soldier on. If you haven't been to Lotteria I recommend you do, they have pretty good Margaritas (though kinda spendy), and the tacos rule. They have a wide selection of Margies, from the most basic to fancy spiced citrus versions, all decent, all around. A wide selection of tacos too, all super delicious. The service is always great, really friendly staff and bartenders.

We had a great time and had a few Margies in honor of NMD, but my gimpy self was pretty achy from sitting so long so we had to call it short on National Margarita Day and head to safe ground = home. Until next time National Margarita Day...

Lonely, Lonely Blog

So I'm pretty new to this whole blog thing, and as it turns out, I'm not quite as full of information as I might have thought. Lots has gone on since my last post and I have to wonder as each event passes which is worthy of logging and sharing and which is not. It's a strange mix... a mix between writing with the partial assurance that you absolutely are the only one who's going to read this blog, and the partial vulnerability that someone else MIGHT ACTUALLY read this blog! Not to mention my beloved boyfriend, Martyn, has not been so inclined to add his written word to our blog (ahem... don't fret on the criticism - he won't be reading this either...). Ha! I kid... but this could wind up being my creation after all, which is all good to me.

So that said, here is my latest entry... Martyn and I are living together now (yikes!), and he is off on a snowboarding trip which leaves me a minute to write. More to come!

Joy, Pain, and Bodily Functions

Being a hairdresser has many rewards, but I have to say if you aren't aware of your posture while working, it can lead to many bodily aches and pains. It was this poor posture that I believe eventually led me to throwing out my back a few weeks ago. I had had a growing ache in my lower back, but this was bad. What finally threw it was just after a long run, all the pounding on the pavement was just too much pressure. Funny though, I had felt good, I didn't see it coming... Then "ouch" turned into "help me!" ... I was partially paralyzed, trembling and sweating in pain. I couldn't stand up, I couldn't sit down. I could only crawl. I missed lots of work. I hung out for three/four days with no shower, hanging on the sofa in my t-shirt and underwear. I couldn't even pee by myself. Martyn had to lift and lower me onto the toilet by my underarms. Heh, funny story involved actually...

Sitting down onto the toilet was painful enough due to the fact that the center of my pain was in my sacrum area, but laughing was the worst. Thank god I didn't sneeze or cough because that would have been torture. I had been holding my pee for hours avoiding the peeing process and couldn't hold it anymore, so Martyn begins to drag me to the bathroom, once there, I assume position and cling to the sink as he poises himself to lower me by my armpits onto the toilet (... what a guy...). As he is lowering me down he begins to fart. Like, machine gun fart. There I am, lowering in pain, laughing in pain; lower - pain, laugh - pain, lower - pain, laugh - pain, a combination so confusing it's enough to make you cry. But no, I didn't cry (much). I wet myself right there. Just let it go. My only choice really, I came there to pee, and pee I did. The following dealings with wet knickers and being "stuck" on the toilet is whole 'nother event, use your imagination...

Hangovers, Part One

Martyn and I spent the evening last night in search of one of the best beverages known to man (or us, rather); the classic margarita. Oh, Rita.. so sour, so sweet, with your salted rims blended so frothy, or so chilly on ice, why do you vary so much?

No, it's true, not all margies are created equal, but all are made to personal taste. Is it too much to ask though to ease up on the corn syrup-aided sweet and sour mix, and sweeten thyself with a little natural citrus instead? After all, Tums aren't always on hand.

Point is here that this search for good margaritas has had many rewards, some of which include the enjoyment of tasty salsas, deep drunken conversations, and fantastic spur of the moment 'pants-off-dace-offs.' However, in excess, margaritas can obviously lead to some of the worst hangovers. Which is what I am experiencing today. Blagh. This won't be the last I see of this type of hangover, oh no. The margarita journey has just begin.

In all this, we are beginning to discover where in LA to get some really good margies. I will start my reviewing just the most recent.

After Martyn's long tattoo session with Charlie at Spotlight Tattoo, we were anxious to celebrate new skin accessories so we headed out to Silverlake (for the record, my hometown). In addition to stopping in at El Chavo for a beer, and following a pit stop at the Dresden, it was Malo that supplied the margaritas. Good stuff to be had here. Goes down smooth, and wicked strong. I'm only and expert in the sense that I've had my fair share of margies, so in comparison to my experiences I give them a 7.5 out of 10. Price isn't bad, hipster environment where you can see all the cool kids look at each other, and sometimes even room at the bar. The margies could have gotten an 8, but they are a bit on the small side, and I like my drink to last.
